Whilst participating in the Battle of Crete alongside HMS Kandahar and HMS Kingston, HMS Fiji came under persistent attack from German aircraft. Having exhausted her ammunition supplies she was defenceless against the attacks and was hit by several bombs dropped by a Junkers Ju 88. Now stationary, the Captain gave the order to abandon ship and at 20.15 HMS Fiji sank beneath the waves south west of the island of Crete. When darkness fell HMS Kandahar and HMS Kingston returned to pick up survivors, rescuing 523 men from the sea. Two hundred and forty one men lost their lives either during the attack or whilst in the sea waiting to be rescued.
