Augustus Anderson was born on 10th August 1893 in Linstead, Berkshire. He started at Martley School on 11th February 1901, remaining at the school until he started work at the age of 14. On the 1901 census Augustus, aged 7, is living with his father Edward, a widower aged 40 and his younger brother Archer O. Anderson aged 5 at Collins Green, Martley.
1911 CensusFather Edward still living at Martley as a boarder at Collins Green Grocery Shop, both children are still living.
Augustus enlisted in the army on 15th December 1915 and was posted to the army reserve. In February 1916 he is shown as a Private in the London Regiment, service no 232535. He was posted to the British Expeditionary Force and in January 1917 he was wounded in the right leg by shell fire. During 1918 he was transferred to the 5th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, service no 126434. He was admitted to hospital in April 1918 after being gassed and deteriorated into delusions and melancholia. He was discharged from the army as physically unfit on 14th June 1919 and admitted to Worcestershire Asylum, Barnsley Hall, Bromsgrove on 4th July 1919. He died in the asylum on 26th September 1919.
His name appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for army casualties located in Worcester Cathedral, service no given as 232535, London Regiment.
There is no record of this casualty on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission or Soldiers Died in the Great War.
