ALLURED Will

W. Allured was the elder son of Mrs. Allured, of Willoughby, Urmstone, Manchester. He entered the Hostel in May, 1909, in the Third Form, and left as head of the Modern side in the Sixth in December, 1911, after passing the Chartered Accountants’ Examination to enter the firm of Messrs. Ashworth and Mosely, Manchester. At School he was industrious and persevering, and won Certificate A in the O.T.C.; was in the Shooting VIII, and 2nd Football team. At home he was a popular member and clever marksman in the Urmstone Miniature Rifle Club. Early in the War he enlisted in the Manchester Regiment and obtained a commission in January 1915. With them he sailed for Gallipoli, and after a time at Mudros was transferred to the 6th Border Regiment. With them he served in Egypt, on the Canal, and in the front line in the desert. He moved to France in June and fell while leading a covering party in the attack on the enemy trenches on the Somme. A friend writes that he €œwon golden opinions for his admirable qualities,€ which bears out the memories of his school days

A Memorial Service for The Men of Worcester and the Neighbourhood who have laid down their lives in the war was held in Worcester Cathedral on All Saints Day, 1916 at 7.30pm. 2nd Lieut. W. Allured, Manchester Regt is listed on the Roll of Honour in the service booklet under Old Vigornians.
