Further Information About ALLCHURCH William

Awarded Military Medal (M.M.)

William Allchurch was the son of William and Mary Allchurch of 10 Stamford Road, Amblecote, a few yards from the Lye boundary. He volunteered in August 1914 for the Staffords and joined the 1st Battalion. In 1915 they were at Loos and in 1916 were very active in the Battle of the Somme. In 1917 they fought at Bullecourt in an attempt to breach the Hindenburg Line but without success. However William Allchurch helped to lead a powerful raid in the same sector on the 17th July and was awarded the Military Medal for his part. The Staffords came into the front line for the Third Battle of Ypres and joined the major attack which began on the 4th October. It took place in the most appalling weather and Sergeant William Allchurch was severely wounded in the back. He was taken to a Casualty Clearing Station near Poperinghe where he died on the 10th October.
