Further Information About HARLEY Frank Clifford
A letter from Trevor Morgans, vicar of Stoulton, Stoulton Vicarage, dated 29th May 1950 can be found within war records held at Worcestershire Archives stating that Trooper Frank Harley, 1st Royal Dragoons was lost at sea on the “Arandora Star”.
The SS Arandora Star left Liverpool bound for St. John’s, Newfoundland on 1st July 1940. She was unescorted and was carrying nearly 1,200 German and Italian internees, including 86 prisoners of war, and 374 British men comprising military guards and ship’s crew. Shortly before 7am on the morning of 2nd July off the northwest coast of Ireland, she was struck by a torpedo from a German submarine. Thirty five minutes later the ship sank taking 800 men with her.
Frank Harley has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Brookwood Memorial.
