Hugh Bayfield Spear was born in Malvern in 1880. In 1901 he was an Assistant Schoolmaster at Malvern College. In 1911 he was a 1st Lieutenant with the Northern Nigeria Regiment.
His medal index card records he entered France in December 1914 and was awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the 1915 Star. Hugh died at sea on the SS Guildford Castle on the 24th October 1922 aged 40. Probate records state his residence as Holmeside, Malvern.
