Further Information About MALIN Edward Thomas

E.T. Malin, Lance Corporal, Worcestershire Regiment was employed by the Midland Railway as a Drayman in the Goods Department at Upton-on-Severn Station.  These details are recorded in the company’s memorial book.

Source: In Remembrance of the Brave Men of the Midland Railway who Gave their Lives in the Great War 1914-1919. Published by the company to coincide with the unveiling of the Midland Railway War Memorial at Derby on Thursday 15th December 1921 at 11.45am.

The following report appears in the Upton News of 21st July 1917:
Mrs Malin, New Street, has received information that her husband, Lance-Corporal E. T. Malin, of the Worcestershire Regiment, is dangerously ill with heat stroke at Basra.  Lance-Corporal Malin, who prior to the war was employed by the Midland Railway, was in the Army Reserve, and answered to the call soon after hostilities commenced.

The following further report appears in the Upton News of 28th July 1917:
Mrs Malin, of Mount View, New Street, Upton-on-Severn, has received the sad intelligence that her husband, Lance-Corporal E. T. Malin, of the Worcestershire Regiment has in hospital at Basra from heat stroke.  We mentioned last week that Lance-Corporal Malin was lying dangerously ill, and now it is our painful duty to record that his death took place on the 13th inst.  The deceased, who was 41 years of age, had sixteen years in the army, seven of which were spent in Bermuda, and he went through the South African War in the 2nd Worcesters.  He volunteered on the outbreak of the present world conflict and was wounded in the ankle on April 19th, 1915, when with the forces which heroically attempted to relieve General Townsend at Kut-et-Amara.  It is a sad irony that on Thursday Mrs Malin received a letter dated 14th June, from deceased enclosing his photograph and stating that he was quite well and had applied for leave to go to India.  Now comes the sad news that the heat stroke has terminated fatally.  Deceased, who was engaged as a drayman at the Upton-on-Severn Railway Station, was very highly regarded by all who knew him, his cheery optimism and invariable good humour under all circumstances winning him many admirers and friends.  Lance-Corporal Malin’s name goes to swell our fast growing Roll of Honour.
