Further Information About SHIELD Hugh Cuthbert

Hugh Shield enlisted as a Trooper in the 29th Light Horse, Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on the 18th September 1914 at Valcartier, Quebec, Canada. On his attestation form he gave his date of birth as 3rd June 1887 in Warwickshire, England, his occupation as a butcher, his next of kin as his father, William Shield, Wolverley, Kidderminster and his religion as Methodist Hugh was 5 feet 10½ inches tall with a fair complexion, grey eyes and red hair. His unit sailed from Canada to England on 3rd October 1914 and he arrived in France on 15th February 1915. His service records show that he was granted 8 days leave from 3rd November 1915, returning to his unit on 12th November. On 10th January 1916 he was appointed Lance Corporal before being sent to Snipers School from 29th January 1916, returning to his unit on 5th February. Hugh was killed in action on 18th May 1916.
