At the same address: John Thomas (father), general labourer, mother and 2 sisters.

The Battle of the Somme commenced on the 1st July 1916. The Battle of Albert (1st – 13th July), comprised the first two weeks of Anglo-French offensive operations. On the 7th July, 36th Infantry Brigade (part of 12 Division), together with the 74th Infantry Brigade of the 25th Division, attacked and captured part of the Leipzig Salient, west of Ovilliers. For the 36th Infantry Brigade, which included the 8th Royal Fusiliers, the attack was on a three battalion front with the 9th Royal Fusiliers on the left, the 7th Royal Sussex in the centre and the 8th Royal Fusiliers on the right, The 11th Middlesex Regiment were in support. The attack began at 08.30am with the 8th Royal Fusiliers coming under heavy machine-gun fire from their flank. By the time the 12th Division was relieved on the 9th July they had suffered 4766 casualties.

Ernest Morgan has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Thiepval Memorial.
