Appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for army casualties located in Worcester Cathedral.

Herbert Burrell was born on 24th November 1897 in Bradford, Yorkshire. On the 1901 census he is resident at 6 Valley Street, Bradford with his parents Samuel and Lily, older brother Horace aged 6 and younger brother Lewis aged 1. By the time of the 1911 census, Herbert and Louis reside as boarders with different families in Worcestershire, Herbert with the Flello family in Menith Wood and Louis with the Teague family in Stockton. Pensax school records show Herbert entering the school on 31st October 1904, his parent is shown as Arthur Flello and his last school as the Orphan Home, Bradford. He left the school on 19th May 1911.

On 27th May 1911 the family sailed from Liverpool on the Megantic to start a new life in Canada.

Herbert Flello enlisted in the Canadian overseas Expeditionary Force on 20th July 1916 at Vancouver, British Columbia. On his attestation form he gave his date of birth as 24th November 1897 in Bradford, England, his occupation as a clerk, his next of kin as his mother Mrs Elizabeth Flello and his home address as 57th Ave and Boundary Rd, Central park, B.C.  Herbert was 5 feet 4 inches tall with brown eyes, dark brown hair and a dark complexion.

On 17th February 1917 he sailed from Canada on the S.S. Southland arriving in England on 27th February 1917. For the next 4 months he was stationed at Seaford, East Sussex before being posted overseas on 27th June 1917. Herbert was killed in action on 10th August 1918.

The Canada War Graves Registers (Circumstances of Casualty) records the following information on Private Herbert Flello:
“Killed in Action”

He took part with his Battalion in an attack on enemy positions near Fouquescourt.  On reaching the final objective, as he was looking over the parapet, he was hit in the head and instantly killed by an enemy bullet.

Herbert Burrell/Flello has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Vimy Memorial as H. Flello.
