Further Information About ROBERTS Matthias Groves
2nd Lieut., Royal Berks Regt.
Born, Oct.ober 10, 1897. Fell in action, July 3, 1917.
Matt. Roberts was the youngest son of M. G. Roberts, Esq., of Briton Ferry, S. Wales. He entered Castle House in the Lower School in January, 1907, and left in the Sixth after nine years, with the hope of pursuing medicine had his life been spared. He represented the School at cricket, football, and on the river, and was Secretary of the Football Club. He was also an exceptionally effective Sergeant in the O.T.C. and won the House Challenge Shield with his section in 1916. On leaving school he was posted to an O.C.B. and later obtained his Commission in the Berkshire Regiment. He went to France in June, met several O.V.’s in Rouen, and wrote letters full of trust and maturing aspiration. He was killed in the trenches a week after reaching the Front, to the great regret of his many friends.
