Further Information About BATE Maurice Charles
2nd Lieut., 1/9th London Regt
Born, June 13, 1898. Killed in Action, August 13, 1917
Maurice Bate, the eldest son of the Vicar of Chittlehampton, N. Devon, and Mrs. Bate entered Castle House from Avondale Prep. School, Clifton, in April, 1913. He left when just 17, from the Fifth Form, in July, 1915, to take a Commission in the London Regiment. He was bent on serving at the earliest opportunity, and earned the good opinion of those with whom he trained. He went to France as soon as his age would allow him, and fell in action in the hard fighting of August last. His Colonel writes: “He had proved himself a capable officer and will be a great loss to the battalion.” R.I.P
