William Potter lived at Wollescote and was the son of Joseph and Minnie Potter. He was posted to the East Yorkshire Regiment and joined the 2nd Battalion in the 3rd Division. This was a regular Division and it was selected to lead the invasion on Sword beach on D-Day, the 6th June. The East Yorkshires landed first and eventually advanced half way to Caen by the first evening. Their losses were 72 killed. The hard fought battle for Caen then lasted for more than six weeks as Rommel’s Panzer divisions arrived for a series of counter attacks. On the 18th July the Division was part of the huge attack on the Bourgebus Ridge, which the enemy regarded as its last strong point in the sector south of Caen. Pte William Potter was killed in action during this attack on the 20th July.
