The following information has been researched by The Black Country Society:
Robert Green was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Green of “The Laurels”, Valley Road, Lye. He was educated at King Edward’s School from 1930 to 1935, where he was known as a sportsman, excelling at rugby and tennis. He then attended Lawrence’s College in Birmingham and was employed by Brown, Hopwood and Gilbert Ltd. He enlisted in 1940 in the Coldstream Guards and was posted to the 2nd Battalion. He took part in the whole of the North African campaign from November 1942 to January 1944, fighting in Libya and Tunisia. On the 5th February 1944 just after the Anzio landing the Guards landed in Italy in the 46th Division to reinforce the main armies confronting the Gustav Line. This had proved a serious obstacle and Kesselring had emerged as a skilful commander. The Guards faced not only the River Garigliano but also the dominating heights of Monte Juga across the valley from Monte Cassino. A major attack was made along the line on the 17th February but this met stubborn German defence. Lance Sergeant Robert Green was killed in this action.
