Ernest Vines enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment in April 1912 at Halesowen. On his attestation form he gave his place of birth as Yardley, Birmingham, his age as 18 and his occupation as a Hammer Driver. He was 5 feet 8 inches tall. On 27th September 1914 Ernest married Gertrude Law in the Parish Church, Halesowen and the couple had a daughter, Edith Gertrude born on 29th January 1917. He served in France with the British Expeditionary Force from 31st March 1915 to the 1st September 1915.

Private Ernest Vines, service no 1731, was discharged from the 1st/7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment at Kidderminster on 3rd December 1915 as €˜being no longer physically fit for War Service at home or abroad under para 392 (XVI)’. At the time of his discharge he was aged 21 years 7 months, was 5 feet 10½ inches tall with light brown hair, grey eyes and a fair complexion. He died aged 24 from tuberculosis of the lung during the June Quarter 1918.
