Frank was my late mother’s uncle (Doreen Sabin) – he was carried across to the Normandy beaches on HMS Canterbury, I do not think he landed on D-Day but some days later. He was then involved in the fighting into Belgium and Holland and across the border into Germany. He was a sergeant in charge of a Bren Gun carrier platoon. In November 1944 the Worcestershire regiment was involved in Operation Clipper:

It was in this operation that Frank received his wounds which subsequently killed him.

He was involved in action at Tripsrath over the German border, his light skinned carrier platoon were caught out in the open by German Self Propelling Guns who very quickly got the range and destroyed the platoon. Every member of the platoon was a casualty. The bodies were taken back over the border and put into a garage, some while later a soldier heard groaning from the garage and found that three were still alive, one was Frank. They were taken to the military hospital in Leopoldsburg but Frank succumbed to his wounds and is now buried in the British Military Cemetery in Leopoldsburg.
