Native of Tralee, Co Kerry.  Scholar of Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

William Goodwin was born in 1892. He attended Bromsgrove School from 1906 to 1911 where he was a Corporal in OTC. Goodwin obtained a Classical Scholarship at Corpus Christi College Oxford, and was in his second year when the war broke out. He obtained a commission in November 1914 and went to the Front
