Thomas Hickinbotham enlisted as a Private in the Australian Infantry on 26th August 1915 at Blackboy Hill, Western Australia. On his attestation paper he gave his place of birth as Saltley, Small Heath, Birmingham, Warwickshire, his age as 42 years, his occupation as a Farmer and his next of kin as his brother, John Henry Hickinbotham, 328 Washwood Heath Road, Saltley, Birmingham, England. Thomas was 6 feet 1 inch tall with a dark complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.
Thomas embarked at Freemantle for an unknown destination on H.M.A.T. R.M.S Mongoliam on 22nd November 1915. His service papers record him joining the 11th Battalion at Habieta, Egypt on 2nd March 1916. On 29th March 1916 he embarked on H.M.T. Corsican at Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force in France, arriving in Marseilles on 5th April 1916. Thomas was reported as killed in action on 20th July 1916.
