Further Information About PRITCHARD Ernest Edward
His brother Arthur Thomas also died in service.
Information in All Saints Church, Wilden states that Corporal Ernest Pritchard was killed in action in France on 1st August 1916 aged 23 and was reported buried at Bazentin-Le-Petit. Further information handwritten on a Wilden Calendar states that he was killed in a bayonet charge at Ovilliers.
Third son of Mr. John Pritchard of Wilden. Joined HM Forces two years ago and had been in France some considerable time. Previous to the outbreak of the war he was employed at Llanelly. When retiring, with the rest of the machine-gun section, in obedience to order, from a charge in the German trenches, he was struck in the chest by a fragment of shell and killed instantly. Buried by his comrades, under heavy shell fire, just behind the front line. Brother of Arthur, killed 11th August 1916.
Source for additional information: Kidderminster Shuttle 19th August 1916.
On July 30th the 10th Worcesters attacked from trenches North of Bazentin-le-Petit towards the German Switch Line. They were swept by machine-gun fire as they left the trenches. After dusk an attempt to consolidate a new line nearer to the enemy was made. But enfilade fire prevented movement and this was eventually abandoned. Their casualties were 14 killed, 60 wounded and 10 missing.
Ernest Pritchard has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Thiepval Memorial.
