Further Information About JARRETT Francis

Brother of Frank Jarrett, Church Street, Upton on Severn.

Aire was the location of the 54th Casualty Clearing Station in August 1918. The 10th Battalion King’s Shropshire Light Infantry was formed from the Shropshire and Cheshire Yeomanry Regiments as part of the 231st Brigade, 74th (Yeomanry) Division. The Division went to France from Palestine in May 1918.

Francis Jarrett probably became a casualty near Epinette, just west of Estrem (Lys area), in an attack on 21st August 1918 by the 231st Brigade which met with fierce and carefully prepared opposition. When the Shropshires moved forward, with patrols in front, the Germans, concealed in houses, allowed the battalion to advance and then put down a barrage of machine guns and field guns on the line of the patrols, and worked back to the supporting parties. The Shropshires were then counter attacked and forced back to the starting point. Casualties were.3 officers and 41 ordinary ranks.
