The following information has been researched and transcribed by Mark Dewdney:
At 10.12am on 1st January the Ivernia was torpedoed by the German submarine U47 fifty eight miles south-east off Cape Matapan in Greece. Within one hour the ship sank; the survivors were landed at Suda Bay in Crete. Thirty six crew members and eighty four troops were killed.
