Born in Conderton. Enlisted Tewkesbury 4/1/15. Aged 32 years 7 months at enlistment, occupation labourer, height 5′ 10″, weight 170lbs with good physical development. He listed his next of kin as his brother Owen Ashwin of Winchcombe. Posted to 11 Glos 23/1/15. Undercanvas at Belhus Park, 27/5/15 to 20/9/15.
Admitted to Fermoy Hospital 26/5/16 suffering from bronchitis and gastritis and deemed to be unsuitable for any regimental or garrison employment. Described as an anaemic and debilitated man who was overage and not like likely to make an efficient soldier. His illness was described as longstanding and not caused by his military service. On 30/6/16 he stated that he was aged 44 vice 38. Discharged 8/8/16 no longer fit for war service – chronic bronchitis, gastritis and gum disease with defective teeth. Aged 34 years 2 months, height 5′ 10″, eyes dark grey, hair black, trade labourer, address Conderton, Worcs. His conduct during his service was described as very good. In April 1917 he was in Union Workhouse Infirmary in Winchcombe Glos where he died 4/4/17 (Soldiers Papers – Ancestry).
