Lancelot Wilkes was born in Bushley in 1896, the only son and one of 2 children of Henry and Ada Wilkes. In 1911 the family are resident at Church Farm, Queenhill, Tewkesbury.

Lancelot Wilkes served as an Engine Room Artificer with the Royal Navy, Service Number M19579. He first sailed on HMS Vivid on 14th March 1916. Lancelot died in Portsmouth in 1982, aged 85.
