In June 1942 HMS Liverpool was part of the Malta resupply conveys. On 14th June she was one of a number of ships taking part in Operation Harpoon when the convoy was attacked South of Sardinia by Italian torpedo bomber aircraft. The attack resulted in the sinking of the Dutch ship MV Tanimbar and serious damage to HMS Liverpool when an aerial torpedo hit the starboard side of the ship by the after engine room which totally disabled the ship She was towed back to Gibraltar by HMS Antelope where she underwent repairs. The attack on HMS Liverpool cost the lives of 15 men with a further 22 wounded.
