The inscription on the memorial reads:
In Loving Memory
LIEUT. W.A. CURTIS R.N.
SEA HARRIER PILOT
FALKLANDS CAMPAIGN
DIED 6TH MAY 1982.
Sea Harrier Serial No XZ453, single seater aircraft, delivered to the Royal Navy on 31st January 1980. One confirmed kill over the Falklands. Lost on 6th May 1982 in suspected collision with XZ452 while on combat air patrol over the Falklands. Pilot Lieutenant Curtis of 801 Naval Air Squadron was killed.
In the early hours of 6th May 1982, Lieutenant Commander Eyton-Jones and Lieutenant Alan Curtis, flying a night patrol in two Sea Harriers, were sent to investigate a suspicious radar contact near the stricken hulk of HMS Sheffield. The weather was appalling, with rain, fog and low cloud. Both pilots failed to return from this mission and were assumed killed in a mid air collision.
The following information is courtesy of Philip Clifford who went to school with William Curtis:
William Curtis was a day boy at Sebright School, Wolverley (near Kidderminster), Worcestershire in and around 1960.
