HMS Russell took part in the Dardanelles campaign, remaining in the eastern Mediterranean after the evacuation of the troops. On the morning of 27th April 1916 she struck two mines that had recently been laid by the German submarine U-73. The resulting fire followed a short time later by an explosion resulted in the loss of over 120 of her crew. The ship listed dangerously after the explosion and the ship sank slowly allowing many of her crew to escape.
Joseph Cotton has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Chatham Naval Memorial.
