Further Information About COPE Darryl
Darryl Cope was born on 27th May 1961, the second son of Marge and Don Cope. Known as ‘Daz’, he joined the Royal Navy at 16-and-a-half and died aged 20 on 4th May 1982, just weeks short of his 21st birthday.
HMS Sheffield was a type 42 destroyer. After several months patrolling the Gulf of Oman, the ship and her crew were on the way home to Portsmouth when they were diverted from Gibraltar to the Falkland Islands. At around 10am on 4th May 1982 HMS Sheffield was hit by an Exocet missile fired from an Argentinian aircraft. Twenty of her crew, mainly in the galley area, were killed and with fires raging, the ship was abandoned.
