Further Information About CLEMENTS George Henry

Appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for navy casualties located in Worcester Cathedral.

George Clements lived with his parents in Heath Lane, Oldswinford. He attended Oldswinford C. of E. School and had been a choir boy at St. Mary’s. Before the Great War he worked for the Great Western Railway as a porter at Halesowen station. He went to France in July 1917 with the Marines in the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division. The Marines played a major role during Third Ypres and at Cambrai in 1917 and helped to prevent German victory in the Spring offensives in 1918. After reinforcement they returned to the front line for the Advance to Victory. In the second Allied attack of this final campaign they were in action on the 21st August and were quickly successful. Casualties, however, included Corporal George Clements who was killed in action on the second day. He was 21 years of age.
