Further Information About BUTTLE William

The birth of William Buttle is registered in the December Quarter 1883 under the Evesham Registration District.

William Buttle entered the Army Reserve on 11th February 1916, transferring to the Royal Naval Division Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 14th June 1917 when he was mobilised.  His date of birth is recorded as 30th August 1889 at Great Hampton, Worcestershire.  However the General Register Office Records show his birth registered in 1883.  On 30th June 1917 William was serving in the 3rd Reserve Battalion at Blandford; on 30th October 1917 he was serving with Anson Battalion Royal Naval Division with the British Expeditionary Force.  His next of kin was his wife Florence Daisy Buttle, 11 West Street, Evesham, Worcestershire.  William was killed or died as a direct result of enemy action.

Evesham Journal and Four Shires Advertiser, 11th November 1918:
An Unfortunate Family
Mrs. Buttle, of 11, West-street, Evesham, received a telegram from the War Office on Wednesday, stating that her husband, Able Seaman William Buttle, of the Anson Battalion, was dangerously ill in the 6th Stationary Hospital, Frevent, France, on August 26, and regretted that permission to visit him could not be granted, and that a letter would follow. The letter was received a short time after the delivery of the telegram, saying that Able-seaman William Buttle, of the Anson Battalion, was dangerously ill, suffering from injury to the spine, causing paralysis.  He is the son of Mr. W. Buttle, Pershore-road, Hampton and joined the army in June 1917, going out to France last September.  On Saturday last his wife received a field card from him saying he was all right.  Before joining the army he was a foreman in the yard of Messrs. White Bros., Vine-street.  Mrs Buttle is the daughter of the late James Badham, who died about eight years ago.  Her brother Victor died two years ago; another brother Pte. Frank Badham, of the Worcester Regt. was killed on March 12 of that year and her mother died the following April.  Much sympathy is felt for Mrs Buttle in her anxiety.

(William married Florence Daisy Badham in 1916. He was the son of William and Mary Ann Buttle (nee Hartland) who were married in 1877).
