Further Information About WRIGHT Lawrence Stratton
Lawrence Wright was born on 12th March 1924. On 29th June 1946 an RAF Dakota passenger aircraft, KJ918, of 48 Squadron took off from Singapore early in the morning. The aircraft’s final destination was Calcutta, India with brief stops at Kuala Lumpar, Butterworth and Rangoon. On board the aircraft were 4 crew members and 14 passengers, 10 of whom were RAF Police of No 20 RAFP District Detachment who were being posted to Burma. Shortly after leaving Butterworth, the pilot reported his position as being on the North East coast near a place called Yala. However, his call was followed by another message reporting extremely bad weather conditions that were forcing him to return to Butterworth. Thirty three minutes later, another call was heard from the pilot who reported being in a terrible storm somewhere over the Cameron Highlands. That was the last message received from the aircraft and when it failed to return to Butterworth a full-scale search was initiated to locate it. Although the search continued for many weeks afterwards in the area of Kedah, no trace of the aircraft was ever found and all those on board were believed to have been killed.
