Harvest of Two Wars
The Roll of Honour of The Downs School, Colwall
J.V. Halliday entered the School in May 1919, and left at Christmas 1922, being then a Leader.  He was a big and stalwart fellow who was a mainstay of the forwards during the first season when we were painfully learning how to play Rugger at the cost of severe beatings from our more experienced rivals. His physique earned him the nickname of “Hippo”.
Halliday had a passion for the sea, and shortly after he left The Downs he entered the Merchant Marine where he remained for some years, making many voyages to the Orient.  Later he retired from the sea and took up work at the Austin Motor Works in Birmingham.  When war broke out he joined the R.A.F., and was killed on active service during the summer of 1940.  He leaves a widow and a young family.
