The book D-Day Commando by Ken Ford provides the following information:
His unit’s mission was to land alongside the Canadians at St.Aubin sur Mer and then link up with British troops on Sword Beach further east. They came under heavy fire on the run-in, with many landing craft being hit, and he was one of 45 men killed in action that day, many of whom including Lt Yates, drowned.
