Walter Wilde was born on 20th April 1917, the son of Richard and Jane Wilde of Kidderminster, Worcestershire. He entered Lyttleton House, Old Swinford Hospital on 16th June 1925.
Walter Wilde joined the Metropolitan Police Force under the ten-year plan and was appointed to the County Borough of Dudley in 1937. He served in Coventry during the blitz period and was highly esteemed by his fellow policeman. He was a good cricketer and he played football for the police team.
On 18th August 1941 Walter volunteered for service in the Royal Air Force and went to Rhodesia for pilot training. He re-joined Dudley police on 27th August 1942 after resigning from the Air Force. On 20th May 1943 he was called up for army service and was posted to the Worcestershire Regiment prior to being transferred to the Hampshire Regiment. He served in North Africa and Italy.
