The birth of Charles Barrington White is registered in the June Quarter 1875 under the West Derby Registration District.
Charles Barrington Wiatt was born on 3rd April 1875. He married Maria Genevieve Sherman on 6th July 1903 at St Luke’s Church, Hampstead. He was promoted from Midshipman to Sub-Lieutenant on 25th February 1899 and to Lieutenant on 6th September 1913 whilst serving on the Implacable prior to leaving the service on 19th September 1913. With the outbreak of war Charles joined the Latona on 27th August 1914 before joining the Princess Irene on 9th March 1915.
The Princess Irene was a passenger liner that had been converted to a minelayer. On 27th May 1915 she was moored in Saltpan Reach, 400 yards off Port Victoria on the Isle of Grain, Kent. At approximately 11.14am the ship exploded without warning, blowing the ship out of the water and killing 352 people, including dockworkers and people on the shore as debris travelled over several miles. The cause of the explosions has never been established.
Charles Wiatt has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
