Arthur Whittle was born in 1897. In 1911 Arthur aged 13 was resident with his parents William and Florence and his younger sister at Ashton Under Hill. He enlisted as Private 202909 Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry on 11th December 1915 and was discharged from the army on 2nd October 1918 due to sickness. He was issued with a silver war badge on 1st November 1918 and later awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. Arthur died aged 30 in 1928.
