William Westwood was born at Bromsgrove in 1898, one of at least 5 children of John and Martha Westwood nee Ashfield.
Bromsgrove Droitwich and Redditch Messenger, 4th August 1917:
Mr John Westwood of 30 New Road, Sidemoor has this week received information from the War Office that his third son, Private William Edward Westwood, Gloucestershire Regiment died on 18th July from wounds received the previous day. Deceased, who was 19 years of age, worked at the Wagon Works at Bromsgrove Station up to January last, when he joined the army and went to France 7 weeks ago. Deceased was a smart soldier and was awarded the second prize for the smartest man in the battalion. The deceased’s badge has been forwarded to his father by a member of the R.A.M.C and in the course of a letter, the writer stated that Private Westwood died very peacefully and without pain.
W. Westwood, Private, Gloucestershire Regiment was employed by the Midland Railway as a Machine Boy in the Carriage and Wagon Department at Bromsgrove Station. These details are recorded in the company’s memorial book.
