William Rufus Upton was born in Birmingham in 1884.  He was husband of Emily Upton nee Wright.

He went to France on 14th April 1915.

Taken from 1914/1918 Roll of Honour
Volunteering in August 1914 and completing a period of training, he was drafted to France in early 1915 and was wounded in action at Richebourg after a few weeks’ fighting.  He was invalided to England and after some time in hospital did duty at Woolwich Arsenal until discharged in December 1916 for munitions work at the Austin Motor Company in Birmingham, where he was engaged until the cessation of hostilities.  He holds the 1914/15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.

William Upton died in Birmingham in 1937, aged 53.
