James Arthur Uings was born on the 3rd October 1890 at Valetta, Malta. He enlisted in the Royal Navy at Chatham for 12 years service on 3rd October 1908 when he was described as 5 feet 10 inches tall with dark brown hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion. Prior to enlisting he was employed as a Porter. James married Winifred M. Rivers during the March Quarter 1917 in the Paddington Registration District. According to naval records he was ‘Lost on Duty’ and discharged dead on the 14th January 1918 and his widow; Winifred Mary, 16 Lancefield Street, Queens Park, London W10 was notified of his death.
