Resident Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, enlisted Worcester.

Alfred Turner was born at Llanidloes, Montgomery in 1894, the son of Alfred and Ann Turner nee Edwards.  He had one sister, Elizabeth Annie Turner born in 1888.  The family lived at 10 Peter’s Finger, Worcester Road, Bromsgrove.  Prior to enlisting at Worcester he was employed as a shoe hand.  He went to France on 1st April 1915.

Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Weekly Messenger, 17th June 1916:
Mr A. Turner of 10 Peter’s Finger, Bromsgrove, has been officially informed that his only son, Private A.E. Turner of one of the Worcestershire Territorials Battalions, was admitted to hospital on June 8th.  It is stated that the case has not yet been diagnosed, but a letter from the ward sister mentions that he is suffering from shell shock.  His condition is described as serious, but everything possible is being done for him.  Private Turner, who is 21 years old, was in the 5th Worcesters for three or four years and then joined the Royal Field Artillery.  His father bought him out, but when war was declared he enlisted in the local Territorials.  He went on active service with his battalion over a year ago.  He was invalided home with a sprained ankle and returned to the Front last March.

The following report appears in the Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Weekly Messenger, 24th June 1916:
DIED FROM SHOCK (SHELL)
Mr A Turner of 10 Peter’s Finger, Worcester Street , Bromsgrove, has been officially informed that his only son, Private A E Turner, died in the No 4 London General Hospital on Sunday from shell shock.  As stated last week deceased was admitted to hospital on the 8th inst. and subsequently was brought over to this country.  Private Turner who is 21 years of age, was in the 5th Worcesters for three or four years, and then joined the Royal Field Artillery.  His father bought him out, but when war was declared, he enlisted in the local Territorials.  He went on active service with his battalion over a year ago.  The funeral takes place at Bromsgrove this (Saturday) afternoon at 2.30 p.m.  The town band will attend, and among those who will be represented will be wounded soldiers from Blackwell Sanitorium, the Volunteer Training Corps, The Ambulance Corps and the Boy Scouts.
