Further Information About SWINGEWOOD George
George Swingewood lived in Stourbridge and volunteered in 1914 for the Worcesters. He joined the 9th (Service) Battalion who were sent in June 1915 to Gallipoli where the initial attack had failed to capture the peninsula. They landed on the 6th August at Suvla Bay without opposition. They moved cautiously forward but the first major assault on the Turkish position opened on the 9th August. It was a disaster with no ground gained and huge casualties. Private George Swingewood was one of those killed in action on the 10th August.
