Oliver Schoolcraft was born on 19th February 1894 in Herne Bay, Kent. His father, also named Oliver Johnson Schoolcraft, had divorced his first wife in 1892, the divorce being widely reported in newspapers throughout the country.
Oliver enlisted as a Wireman in the Royal Navy on 30th September 1916 for the duration of the hostilities. He was 5 feet 3¾ inches tall with black hair, hazel eyes and a dark complexion. He served on several ships before joining HMS North Star in 1917.
