Frederick Porter was born in 1882. He married Flora Cresswell Taylor at the Registry Office, Evesham on 24th November 1908. In 1911 Frederick aged 29 was the head of the household and resident with his wife Flora and their 2 children at Ashton Under Hill. By 1918 the couple had increased their family by a further 4 children.

Frederick enlisted in the Grenadier Guards as Private 8192 on 8th August 1899 at Worcester. On his attestation form he gave his address as Ashton Under Hill, Tewkesbury, his age as 18 years 4 months and his occupation as a Labourer. He was 5 feet 9¼ inches tall with a fresh complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He served in South Africa during the Boer War from 8th November 1901 to 8th October 1902. Initially enlisting for 3 years, Frederick extended his army service until 9th August 1907 when he was transferred to the army reserve. He was mobilized on 5th August 1914 and posted overseas on 12th November 1914. Frederick was posted to the army reserve on 23rd May 1919.
