Harry Philpotts enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 18th March 1915 at Victoria, British Columbia. On his attestation paper he gave his date of birth as 7th April 1893 at France Lynch, Stroud, Gloucestershire and his occupation as a Labourer. Harry was 5 feet 10 inches tall with a fair complexion, grey eyes and fair hair.
He sailed from Canada on 1st July 1915 arriving in England on 10th July 1915 where he remained until 9th March 1916 when he embarked for France. On 8th October 1916 Harry was admitted to No 16 General Hospital at Le Treport, France with suspected dysentery. It was obviously severe as he was transferred to England where he was admitted to Reading War Hospital, England on 8th November, remaining in hospital until 9th March 1917 when he was transferred to the Canadian Convalescent Hospital at Epsom. He was finally discharged from hospital on 2nd April 1917. Harry was promoted to Lance Corporal on 9th April 1918. He was killed in action on 12th October 1918. His medals, scroll and memorial cross were sent to his parents George and E.A. Philpotts, France Lynch, Chalford, Gloucestershire.
