George Nokes was born at Bromsgrove in 1892, the son of Moses and Margaret Nokes. The family resided at 6 Church Street, Bromsgrove and prior to the war Bertie was employed as a butcher’s assistant.

Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Messenger, 2nd November 1918:
On Thursday of last week, Mrs V Nokes, of Unicorn Hill, Redditch received the news of her brother-in-law, Private G. Nokes, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, having been killed in action on September 27th. Private Nokes joined the colours in February 1916 and had been on active service over two years. Private Nokes was the third son of the late Mr and Mrs Moses Nokes of Church Street, Bromsgrove. A brother of the deceased died from wounds 18 months ago and three others are still serving in France. Before the war, Private Nokes lived with his sister, Mrs Wheeler, Amiss’s Yard, High Street, Bromsgrove and was employed by Messrs Nelson, butchers, High Street.
