Further Information About LIDDELL Arthur

Arthur Liddell was born at Bromsgrove in 1896, one of 8 children of William and Jane Liddell nee Gower.  He was employed as a brassfitter for the Midland Railway Company. He enlisted at Bromsgrove in December 1916 and went to France in March 1917.

Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Messenger, 19th May 1917:
Mrs Liddell of 119 Worcester Street, has received a letter from the Infantry Record Office, Lichfield, dated 12th May saying that her son, 32977, Private Arthur Liddell, 8th Lincolnshire Regiment, is posted as missing after an engagement on 16th April.  Private Liddell, who is 20 years of age, enlisted on December 12th 1916 in a training reserve battalion.  Previous to joining the forces he was employed as a brassfitter’s assistant at the Midland Railway Carriage and Wagon Works at Bromsgrove Station.

Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Messenger, 16th February 1918:
Mrs J. Liddell of 119 Worcester Street, has this week been informed by the War Office that no further news having been received relative to her son, Private Arthur Liddell, Lincolnshire Regiment, who has been missing since 9th April 1917, the Army Council has been constrained to conclude that he is dead and that his death took place on either that date or since. Deceased, who was 20 years of age, enlisted in December 1916 and went out last March. Before the war, he worked on the brass fitting department of the Midland Railway Wagon Works at Bromsgrove.

The following information has been researched by Sandra Taylor:
A. Liddell, Private, Lincolnshire Regiment was employed by the Midland Railway as a Fitter’s Boy in the Carriage and Wagon Department at Bromsgrove Station.  These details are recorded in the company’s memorial book.

Arthur Liddell has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Arras Memorial.
