In 1891, Frank King aged 12 was resident with his parents, George and Sarah King and his 9 siblings in Vicarage Street, Painswick. In 1901 Frank E. King, his widowed mother Sarah and several of his siblings were still resident in Vicarage Street in Painswick. By 1911 Frank Edward King, single, aged 29, born Brownhills, Gloucestershire, was resident at Walkly Wood, Nailsworth.
Frank Edward King enlisted in the Militia as Private 4069, 4th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment on 17th January 1898 at Stroud. On his attestation form he gave his place of birth as Chalford near Stroud, Gloucestershire, his age as 18 years and his occupation as a Labourer. He was 5 feet 4½ inches tall with blue eyes, light brown hair and a fresh complexion. He was subsequently discharged by Paral*** (unreadable) on 31st December 1898.
Undeterred, Frank King next enlisted in the Militia as Private, 62243, 4th Battalion Oxfordshire Light Infantry on 31st October 1902 at Thame. On his attestation form he gave his place of birth as Chalford near Stroud, Gloucestershire, his age as 21 years, his occupation as a Labourer and his next of kin as his brother, Fred King of Chalford near Stroud. Frank was 5 feet 4¾ inches tall with blue eyes, sandy hair and a fresh complexion. He was subsequently rejected for military service on medical grounds on 1st November 1902.
