HMS Tynedale was an Escort Destroyer. On the morning of 12th December 1943 she was escorting a convoy when she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-593. The ship broke in two and sank in the Mediterranean, northwest of Bougie, Algeria, with the loss of 73 crew members.

Philip Jeffries has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Plymouth Naval Memorial.
