Further Information About HICK Horace Joseph
The birth of Horace Joseph Hick is registered in the December Quarter 1899 under the Stourbridge Registration District.
Horace Hick volunteered for the Worcesters and joined a Machine Gun section. He was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, probably in 1916, and served in the 57th Battalion. This was part of the 57th (West Lancashire) Division and by the middle of 1918 they were involved in the Advance to Victory. Their advance began in late August when they came up to the strong German defensive line south of Arras. A major attack started on the 26th August at Riencourt and in a five day battle they penetrated the Drocourt-Queant Line and were well on their way to Cambrai. The next phase came at the end of September when the next advance took them to Graincourt and to the St. Quentin Canal just south of Cambrai. However, among the casualties was Private Horace Hick, who was killed in action on the 4th October.
Horace Hick entered the theatre of war on 21st September 1915. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the 1915 Star.
Horace Hick has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
