The 1918 Spring Offensive or Kaiserschlacht (Kaiser’s Battle), also known as the Ludendorff Offensive, was a series of German attacks along the Western Front during the First World War, beginning on 21st March 1918, which marked the deepest advances by either side since 1914. On this date the Germans launched Operation Michael, a big offensive against the British Fifth Army and the right wing of the British Third Army. This was broadly in the area of the Somme, and Pozieres was in the northern part of this German advance.
As a Company Sergeant Major Percy Hemmings held a senior NCO position (albeit Acting) – perhaps a surprisingly senior rank for his age.
Percy Hemmings has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Pozieres Memorial.
