W. Hemming volunteered in September 1914 and was soon despatched to the Western Front, where he was employed in the important job of carrying supplies to the troops. The nature of his work led him into many sectors and into many engagements and he was in action at Loos, Ypres and Armentieres. Later he did good service in Salonika until he was discharged as unfit for service, owing to chest complaints in February 1918. He holds the 1914/15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.

He resided at 3/72, Icknield Street, Hockley, Birmingham.
